I hate this movie with a passion. I went to see it because a friend told me it was the greatest (and scariest) film ever. I was bored witless. It finally started to get interesting... and then ended 5 minutes later. Three cretins more deserving to die in the woods I have never seen in a film. Water flows downhill! There is only one river on the map you are using! I also hated it because I worked in TV and kept thinking things like "Well the reason you've run out of cigarettes is because that rucksack must be jammed full of film cans and videotapes, so there's no room for ciggies". The bit where 2 of them are having an argument with the 3rd filming it... then one of the 2 picks up a camera so there's footage of person 3 joining the argument... no, no, no! Human beings arguing do not pause to film someone else!

Luckily, since I saw it shortly after it came out and therefore when it was still being talked about, I did not feel in the least cheated: I had no expectations in the first place.
My main reaction was "goodness, don't they know any more interesting swear-words than THAT? What boring little people. And what on earth will they have left to say if something does suddenly rise up and rend them limb from limb, now they have used up the only emphatic they know?"

My memories of this are entirely bound up in the spectacle of the event.
I saw it in a crowded theatre the week it came out at the insistence of friends with a large group of friends.
It was a boring watch and it was dumb and “follow the river” and “maybe just burn the house” were expressed among my friends as it was watched.
All that said the atmosphere in the theatre was genuinely tense in a way I’ve never experienced before or since and quite a number of folks were genuinely shaken as they left the theatre.
I can’t imagine anyone ever wanting to re-watch it and the effect of the film on people I knew well absolutely puzzled me.
